Carbon Engineering - AIR TO FUELS™
Technology Owner: Carbon Engineering
About: AIR TO FUELS™ technology combines Carbon Engineering's Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology with several other advancing technologies, such as renewable energy, water electrolysis and fuels synthesis, to produce liquid hydrocarbon fuels. In principle, a wide variety of hydrocarbons can be generated, but their focus is predominantly on diesel and jet fuel. This process has three major steps: 1) direct air capture to capture and purify CO₂ from atmospheric air, clean electricity to electrolyze water and generate hydrogen, 3) the CO₂ and hydrogen are thermo-catalytically reacted to produce syngas, and reacted again to produce hydrocarbons.
Application: Atmospheric Capture
Type: Direct Air Capture
Utilization: Synthetic Hydrocarbons
Location: Squamish, B.C., Canada
Partners: Bill Gates, Murray Edwards, Oxy Low Carbon Ventures, LLC, Chevron Technology Ventures, and BHP. CE has been well supported within the clean-tech innovation system and has led projects funded by top-tier government agencies in both Canada and the USA.
