NREL CO2 to Formate
Technology Owner: National Renewable Energy Laboratory
About: Researchers at NREL have developed a new way of converting CO2 to a more usable product- formate. The improved method utilizes an electrochemical process to reduce CO2 to formate. The process has yielded a high rate of formate production and product selectivity. The formate can then be used primarily as feed for biologic organisms or to be coupled with enzymes that then produce chemicals such as ethylene or ethanol. The researchers' larger goal is to utilize more efficient electrons to convert CO2 and other waste compounds into useful, industry-relevant products.
